Ocean Cay becomes a portable lamp

Produced by Zafferano, the new battery-operated lamp is inspired by the iconic lighthouse on the Bahamian island that MSC Cruises has converted into a marine reserve. The lamp was designed by architect Matteo Ragni, winner of 2 Compassi d’Oro, and can be booked through a ‘waiting list’ or purchased as a preview at Rinascente in Via del Tritone in Rome. 

 

Zafferano and MSC Cruises launch the new ‘Ocean Cay’ portable lamp, inspired by the lighthouse on the Bahamian island converted into a marine reserve by the cruise company. At the moment, those interested in purchasing can subscribe to the specially created ‘waiting list’. Alternatively, the first examples are already available exclusively for sale – in limited numbers and while stocks last – at the Rinascente store in Via del Tritone in Rome.

Soon the lamps will also arrive in Zafferano’s official sales channels. The new lamp was designed by the mastery of architect and designer Matteo Ragni, winner of two Compassi d’Oro awards and author of several objects that have become part of people’s everyday life. “Ocean Cay is a small domestic lighthouse, capable of illuminating the most memorable moments of our lives: a dinner with one’s soul mate or with lifelong friends, reading our favourite book before going to sleep, dreaming of adventurous and wonderful journeys, guided by the light of a sure beacon that illuminates our future,” says the architect.

This creation therefore recalls, in form, the characteristic red and white striped lighthouse that, at 30 metres high, dominates Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve: the Bahamas island that MSC Cruises has reconverted from a disused industrial site for sand mining to a marine reserve where nature is once again repopulating the island.Made of die-cast aluminium, the Ocean Cay wireless table lamp is equipped with a rechargeable and replaceable lithium-ion battery, which offers a battery life of approximately 11 hours at full power and is easily recharged on the contact base. A practical touch button on the top of the lamp allows the user to adjust the intensity of the LED light source and to choose the colour temperature of the light between cold, natural and warm.

“Sea-themed furnishing elements are increasingly in fashion, not only because they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, colourful and lively, but also because the sea inspires, evokes emotions and memories linked to holidays, and thus generate well-being and positivity. For this reason we wanted to go beyond the mere concept of a holiday and link the MSC brand to a design object that would reach the homes of Italians,” explains Leonardo Massa, Vice President of MSC Cruises. “We therefore chose Zafferano because we were looking for a leading brand in the portable lamp production sector to offer a product of undisputed quality and design,” concludes Massa.
