ABB technology for comfort and efficiency installed at Gattermayer’s new Cagliari headquarters in Sardinia

21 March 2025

Cagliari-based Gattermayer  which realises electrical and technological systems opened new headquarters this year. The building automation system with ABB i-bus® KNX technology installed for automation of lighting systems, shutter panel openings, and thermoregulation management installed.

Gattermayer’s new building in Sardinia is designed for maximum comfort and efficiency of facilities.

ABB has provided ABB i-bus® KNX technology for the building automation system at the new Sardinian headquarters of Gattermayer, which is a leader in the the construction of electrical and technological systems. Established in the late 1950s as a plant engineering company, Gattermayer designs, builds and manages civil and industrial electrical systems, special and automation systems both domestically and abroad. In 2024, the company’s new Cagliari headquarters was opened as the result of an ambitious project to accomodate expansion and to create a welcoming, efficient and dynamic building combining comfort, design and functionality. The building structure is developed around the “square”, an open space at the heart of the building and comprises two floors. The ground floor contains offices and meeting rooms while the second floor houses administrative and technical offices. Above the plaza stands a the large meeting room, made of a protruding structure with a sophisticated design. Finally, the back area is home to the workshop where machining is done and electrical panels are assembled.

ABB i-bus® KNX system was installed for the automation of lighting systems, shutter panel openings, and complete thermoregulation management. The KNX system manages the control of valve actuators and fan coils, using ABB Tenton® thermostats, true multifunctional control units configured for this new location, as interfaces. Lighting is complementarily automated along with the opening of the darkening panels of the central part for visual comfort. All manual lighting and blind controls are managed through the ABB i-bus® KNX system. ABB i-bus® KNX modules were installed in the switchboards, which enabled a supervisory system capable of real-time monitoring of the installations. through an interface that can also be consulted remotely. Plant automation and automated management allowed the building to be certified according to the UNI and ISO 52 120, the reference standard for energy efficiency for this type of building.

“Designing a building that focused on comfort, functionality, and design with rooms with large open areas and considerable vertical development was a real challenge, particularly with regard to lighting and temperature control’ said Gianmarco Sitzia, the designer responsible for the construction of the facilities. “The systems at Gattermayer’s new headquarters had to be functional and of undisputed quality, so the decision to implement a building automation system via the KNX protocol, the standard of reference for this type of realization, was crucial. We chose ABB with its ABB i-bus® KNX system for the automation of the lighting systems, the openings of the darkening panels and for the complete management of thermoregulation.

Gattermayer manufactures the switchboards required for installations using ABB carpentry and products for both low and medium voltage executions. The development was entered into the Best Energy Efficiency Project category at the KNX Italian Awards 2024 which recognizes outstanding innovation and manufacturing excellence in Italy.
