A rainbow of LEDs lights up the sky above Athens

A spectacular iris lights up the façade of Athens International Airport. An ambitious and creative project curated by the design team of Linea Light Group and Eleftheria Deko and Associates, an award-winning Greek lighting design studio. The visionary lighting project intends to give a new face to the building on the occasion of the airport redevelopment defined by the studios Alexandros N. Tombazis and Associates and AVW Architecture.

The outdoor lighting project aimed to emphasise the main façade of the new building, which is the most visible part for those arriving at the airport located on the main roadways. The cornerstone was primarily the front external façade of the new wing, visible immediately when reaching the airport, illuminated by the best solutions provided by Linea Light Group. For this purpose, the Italian company located in Treviso specifically redesigned a custom version of the Paseo linear profile, which has modules RGBW individually managed by a DMX control unit. Its versatility made it possible to create an “extra-large” model, which can be recessed directly on the sunshades of the structure to produce evocative and spectacular effects.

Thus, by combining 253 modules, Paseo Giga was conceived, starting from the creation of an aluminium casing to be installed inside the sunshades with the dual task of inserting the electrical wiring and allowing it to be recessed. Made of polycarbonate and with an IP67 degree of protection to withstand atmospheric agents, the modules create a unique show by combining elegant white lines with coloured scenography, featuring static or dynamic effects capable of fading, turning on and off. Linea Light Group’s signature is also visible indoors, in the wing dedicated to low-cost flights where Rada downlights have been installed to ensure the total absence of direct glare and guarantee smooth and consistent lighting.

Finally, the less visible sides of the building are enhanced by Archiline PRO profiles in the 4000K monochromatic version, managed with DALI protocol, alongside a custom version of Thin66: the linear profile, with diffused light emission, accentuates the details of the building’s architectural features, elegantly emphasising its façades.
