Lighting solutions for dark light applications

12 July 2023

See the light but not the source: the main objective and effect of the so-called “dark light”. By dimming the source to create a harmonious and natural atmosphere, these LED solutions make the environment lighting more comfortable and without dazzling.

The concept of “dark light“, equivalent to “low glare” lighting, refers to specific features that give life to soft lighting and reduce glare and eye fatigue caused by prolonged observation of a light source. Particularly effective and appreciated in indoor contexts, dark light LED solutions create a comfortable environment in which it is difficult to notice where the light comes from, unless the subject is directly below and looking up.

Definition of a dark light source

The dark light has three areas of interest:

  • Up to 30°: that is the angle of the beam emitted by the light source
  • Between 30° and 60°: that is the beam angle with limited glare
  • More than 60°: that is the so-called “Dark light” area

A light source can only be classified as “dark light” when it satisfies the most relevant requirement: less than 200 cd/lm2 above the viewing angle of 60°C. That is because the average person has vertical peripheral vision of less than 60°.

RED branded LED solutions for dark light

In recent years Universal Science has developed under RED – Integrating Lighting Technologies brand, a series of spot and linear LED modules, combined with specific reflectors, for dark light applications. These reflectors are expertly selected and proposed to minimize the light in the glare area and optimize colour uniformity and efficiency, offering maximum visual comfort.
